Quick Start
1
Break it down. Hover a box and click + to add a driver to its right, or × to remove it with everything under it.
2
Edit in place. Click any label, value or column heading to change it; click a box's colour bar to recolour its branch.
3
Type it out. In the Outline panel: the first line is the root, Tab nests a driver under the line above. Add a value after a bar: "Revenue | $12.4m".
4
Show the maths. End a line with [+], [-], [x] or [/] to show how its children combine; click the circle on the chart to cycle it.
5
Label the columns. Start the outline with "Columns: Key question | Drivers | Hypotheses", or click Add column label above the tree.
6
Share or export. Numbered adds 1, 1.1, 1.1.1. Copy link shares an editable chart; Export PNG gives a slide-ready image at 2x.

Questions

Issue tree or driver tree?

Both. Leave out values for an issue tree; add values and + − × ÷ for a KPI or value driver tree.

How big can the tree be?

Four columns including the root, up to 6 children per box and 40 boxes in all.

How do I show the maths?

End a line in the outline with [x], [+], [-] or [/]. Click the circle on the chart to cycle it.

Issue tree or mind map?

Use an issue tree when each box is made up of the boxes to its right; a mind map for loose ideas around a centre.
